Bodrum is located at the southern edge of the Bodrum Peninsula, across from the Greek island of Kos. Once a small fishing village, it has evolved into a town popular with the artistic and yachting community. Its castle, built by the Knights Hospitaller in the 15th century, looms over the town, with streets of whitewashed houses and tumbles of greenery below.

There are several beaches easily accessible from Bodrum including Gümbet, a resort and popular water-sports centre; Bitez, great for windsurfing; and Akyarlar and Karaincir, closest to Kos and excellent for windsurfing. All are reachable by dolmus (bus) and gulets.

The 15th century Castle of St Peter is the centre point of Bodrum. Its mediaeval turrets dominate the town, which consists of bustling streets, a traditional Turkish bazaar, and even a Museum of Underwater Archaeology - the only one of its kind in Turkey. To the west of Bodrum is a deep, enclosed harbour and marina, with fishing boats, and countless charter sail boats. On the other side of the peninsula is a wider, more open bay which is also worth exploring, particularly for its romantic waterside restaurants.Boat trips can be taken from Bodrum to the Greek Islands of Kos and Rhodes, but remember to take you passport if embarking on a cross-border jaunt.

Restaurants

As with most holiday resorts in Turkey, the main cuisine is traditional Turkish. You will also find a lot of Italian cuisine available, including pizza. There are many fast-food outlets as well as many seafood restaurants along the harbour. They can be slightly more expensive but are definitely worth it. There is plenty of nightlife for you to enjoy with many late night music bars, nightclubs and discos. One of the nightclubs is a large open-air venue which is very popular among both tourists and locals. There are plenty of shops for you to look around, including clothing shops, jewellery shops and bag and shoe shops. You will also be able to find plenty of souvenirs to take home with you and there is even a market on Thursdays and Fridays. Buses are reliable and efficient and take you all over Bodrum and neighbouring resorts throughout the day.
